As a child, I did not like reading, we were taught using the sight word approach. We had to memorize each and every word. The books we read were Alice and Jerry and Dick and Jane. We all laughed at the ridiculousness of the controlled vocabulary "Look, Alice look! See Spot run! Run, run, run!" I used to think, "This is not how we speak; this is so boring!" I had no desire to read. That was a contributing factor in my becoming a reading specialist. I knew how it felt to not want to do the fir...
ADD/ADHD
Within the 25 years that I was a reading specialist, I had the opportunity to teach a variety of classified special needs students. Many of my students were mainstreamed. I would push into the classroom or they would work in my room and receive small group instruction. Some children were attention deficit, with or without hyperactivity. Depending on the severity of the student's attention deficit issues, behavior plans were written or "check in check out" charts were created, to address the student's behavior throughout the day. Those students would then earn a meaningful reward. I was a member of our building's Child Study Team. We were entrusted to listen and evaluate all the students brought before the team and would set plans or try to determine if a referral was appropriate.
American history
During the beginning of my career, I worked as the reading specialist in an academic resource center. I tutored middle school students in American History. I was able to make it come alive for them. We were able to relate many of they situations to their lives. They were shown how to create study guides utilizing a modified SQ3R. When they were able to create important main idea questions through the proper structured reading of the content area material, they were then able to study and grasp the main concepts and associate the important details with those concepts.
autism
I took several classes and workshops in autism. One was an applied behavioral analysis college credit course. I worked very closely with the school behavioral analysis specialist since I worked with a several autistic children over an 18-year period. I tutored an autistic young lady for 5 years. She had barely broken the code when we selected a high interest primary-level series that she was motivated enough to learn to read because she loved reading about the same characters and their worldly adventures! This enhanced her reading comprehension and encouraged her to read as many books in the series as she could. Together we wrote language experience stories about the different social experiences in her day to day life. We then would role play how she could have dealt with the situations that would have helped her in the future.

Great tutor for my dyslexic elementary student. She knows Wilson, so can help with that, but also has lots of other knowledge and material to adjust to my daughter who doesn't quite meet a particular profile. Helpful for building her self esteem and getting her to open up also. She brings her experience as a teacher to make each session worthwhile.

Maddi was a wonderful surprise to find via WyzAnt! She is pleasant and easy to work with. My daughter loves her and has been making steady and quick progress using the Wilson techniques. My daughter loves her sessions so much that she never complains about going! Maddi's knowledge of the Wilson Technique and her experience as a teacher working with elementary age children is a invaluable!

She is absolutely the sweetest most patient teacher. My daughter loved her and was so excited to meet with Maddi. She cannot wait for her next appointment. She felt that she is going to be fun and really help her. Not a usual response from my child with tutors from the past. A+

Maddi has great passion for teaching children to read. She has only worked with my daughter for 2 weeks now, but my daughter absolutely loves and feels comfortable with her -- which is extremely important for a productive learning environment. Maddi is an expert on breaking the extremely complex task of reading into small steps that actively engage children and allow them to learn the needed knowledge to become a proficient reader.
